How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder Empty
PostSubject: How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder   How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder EmptySat Jan 19, 2013 7:54 am

I've been brazing alot lately so I thought I'd share a little "know how" with the forum. As I haven't seen a how to on it yet.

First off: If you're not of age get your guardians to help. Because it's extremely hot and you can get serious burns.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
Tools/Materials you'll need:

Dremel (with cut off disks)
Mapp Gas torch. (The yellow one) or acetylene torch.
Harris safety silv-45
Harris stay-silv flux
Magnet (Optional)
Metal- (any kind a magnet will stick too.)
Vise or pair of Vise grips.
Helping hands (really only needed on intricate stuff, but helps)
Water and a rag.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________

(1)Design your rail on cardboard or paper, I use cardboard.
Sketch on a piece of cardboard or paper in the actual size you want your rail.

(2) With your dremel make your cuts and clean the spots that are touching you are wanting to attach together.
Like so:

(3) Use a vise or vise grips to make bends as you had designed. (If you have bends)

(4) Place all the pieces in position on the cardboard: This way you know everything is proper.

(5) Fishmouth your metal so it cradles the other piece its joining to.
not a great pic but you get the idea:

(6) Use the flux to coat the cleaned joints. Put the flux only where you want the braze to go. Set the rail up as you want it using helping hands, vise, vise grips, magnets, or all of the above. Make sure the spot you're working on is held secure and stable, you don't want it moving on you while its red hot. Like this:

(7) Heat the selected spots until they are red hot, and while still torching your spot gently tap your silver across the spot you want joined. Like this:

( Mapp gas is something like 3 times hotter than propane/butane, getting the metal red hot quicker.)

(8.) DO NOT TOUCH until you dowse the hot joint of your rail with water and/or wet rag. Should look like this:
How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder GEDC4630-1

(9)Repeat until your rail is complete and can stand on its own.

Good luck and if it doesnt work for you first try, try again!

Thanks guys!

This is just one way to do it. If you have access to a welder thats cool too but seems abit overkill and alot more grinding down welds, with braze you don't have to do all that.

Yeah, this one in particular uses bike chain link to screw it down to the table, a plank of wood whatever, and works really nicely if you hate the "legs" getting in the way of your sweet tricks.

Oliver, thanks man, and I'll do my best to have it finished tomorrow and get it sent out, before all the mayhem starts. very happy

Here's a close up of the brazed joint after its been cleaned with sandpaper or 3m pad.

Glad you all like it.

Zink, I really like the bike link as well, it saves alot of time in drilling holes, and if you put it on a plank you can take it and skate it everywhere. Feel free to post some you guys have made.

As of right now, I don't really have the time to make a butt load of rails, but maybe soon.
Feel free to pm me though.

My god Murdock, this is some sweet sweet handcrafting it warms my heart to see used for this! Its the way we make custom grills for our hotrods.. How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder 2225400551

The same tecnique was used to make both the grill and most of the interior skeleton in this vintage Volvo Amazon built and owned by my friend Eivind Svensen.

Looking forward to see the progress of your park build, so feel free to share as much as possible. I am shure the forum readers would enjoy it.. Dude, that volvo is so sick. I learned how to do this on Rccrawler, and then got a job in a bodyshop and learned how to apply it to all sorts of hobby work. Thanks man I love working with metal, I'm glad im getting such a positive response, It makes me want to build a ton of rails....

Here's a few examples of other things I do with braze.

bumpers, linkage, spare tire rack with working spring loaded latch, whip antenna all made by me. happy

Oh, thank you. You are most kind! My opinion is that it wouldnt hurt the forums to have good WIP (work in progress) threads. A dedicated WIP section of the forums would be cool and tidy.. How to make a rail using braze, and silver solder 650269930
