It's cause the angled sides are slightly curved. Which when they are placed right creates extra/less space.

Just need to notice the angle of the "longest side" of the "triangle". It is not a continuous straight line.

I think what Xi is saying, is that look at the longest side of the whole shape; it isn't a straight line on the second one. Look at how the shape splits the small squares. They are different.
