| I know what you mean. I used to be embarrassed about it in my early middle school days, but now I'll mention it to anyone who gets to know me. I usually won't fingerboard in public just because the sound tends to annoy people, but sometimes I can't help it if I see a nice obstacle |

| whats to hide? Not like its illegal or something. Hard to hide when its so goddamn loud to but nah I fingerboard on my gf while shes lying down, her bod has some great hips and bank to banks on it. Shes known since we started dating pretty much. All my friends know. Family. Its a favorite hobby, and people who are close to me should know my hobbies amirite? Shit lots of times ill just pop a few fuckin nollie flips while im waiting for food at a restaurant. Sometimes people get bummed on the noise, I respond by doing it louder and really stomping those tricks. Like I give a fuck, its boring waiting for food. |

Dude, you should fb with him and try to get some more people involved. I'm 22 and never have anyone to fingerboard with. Also, I post my videos on my Facebook sometimes for anyone to see. The idea of making fun of someone for having a hobby that he/she enjoys makes me laugh, but I understand where a lot of you are coming from. |

| I'm turning 22 soon and I'm pretty sure a lot of my peers and acquaintances think it's just a silly toy and that I'm childish, but somehow they see how much I love it and how much effort I put into both my webstore and how I use it as a platform to practice my graphic design. If I am happy with it, I could care less about what they think. Those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter. My parents found it noisy, but over time they grew to be okay with it.
I have close friends who don't really understand fingerboarding but they don't mind it the slightest bit and they even ask me questions about how it functions, how the parts work, how do people make decks so precisely when it's so tiny, how the community is like, etc. Just because they're trying to understand it more. And those who are my close friends who don't like or care about it don't come judging me for it because there's always more to a person than just their hobbies. For those who actually dislike it and talk to me about it and tell me that I'm wasting my money, again, I point out all the things that they buy that aren't exactly mandatory in a person's basic life (e.g. spend $400 on a pair of headphones? yeah audiophiles have the right to enjoy their hobby so why can't we), double-standards.
If you want to date someone and you're afraid that if people identifying you with the line "still plays with toys and techdecks and stuff" can be a cockblocker or prevent you from making friends, you may want to look for someone else anyway because if a person can't even accept your surface hobbies, what makes you think they are even ready to interact with you on an even-deeper level? Just something to think about. True fact is, most of the time, if someone hears that they would just go "That's fine, I can roll with that."
If a person you care about truly cares about you enough, you don't have to hide it. The fact that there is any hiding at all in interpersonal relationships (be it bf/gf or just friends), even when there's no lying, isn't comfortable when it goes on for a long time. I can't stop you guys from feeling self-conscious about fingerboarding, but if you enjoy it, you should try to be at the very least not be ashamed of what you like.
Regarding random strangers in public, you probably won't even see them a second or third time in your life again so.. I couldn't care less. |

| Another thing about this is when people ask you where you got it and you say you bought it online then the next question is always about the price.
Then you have the awkward moment where you have to tell your friends you bought a wooden mini skateboard for 50 dollars over the internet.
I usually try to explain that the bearings on the wheels are what make it super expensive and because the wood quality is usually really good. |

But no-one wants to be singled out as the teenager who still plays with toy skateboards, which is my main point But the thing is, 1) Fingerboarding has evolved from being "just a toy" 2) Lots of people above the age of 20 fingerboard. Lots. These are the two main things I have to highlight. Fingerboarding has already been redefined over the past few years. I think believing in that starts from you yourself. If you keep doing what you are passionate about, eventually people will try to understand it. |

Some people are open minded, yeah, but there's no way for the majority of people to know about the depth that fingerboarding goes into. And they're not prepared to listen either, as soon as they see it they'll start to rip on it. And yeah, but the people over 20 aren't in school anymore, which is probably why they can be more open about it. The friends that the older people have are true friends, not just people they're aquainted with at school etc. |

If people were mature enough to be open minded about people's hobbies then these problems wouldn't exist, but as long as school life is concerned, the environment just isn't mature enough. But at the end of it all, nobody wants to be bullied, especially for doing something they enjoy. |

Yeah dude, pretty much all my setups cost me at least $150 a piece, and that's being low... People have stopped giving me shit for fingerboarding and buying shit because they see how good I've become and how much I love it, and I guess since I've stuck with it people just pass it by like they know I fingerboard and they don't care. The coolest things happen too haha people will tell me they met somebody who fingerboards and then we meet and yeah haa. |

They hold it up and ask me how much it is. I answer them. They suddenly start handling it like it's made of glass. |

We also had something like this in 5th grade. I was on the back row and there was a space which is perfect for a half pipe. Got an illustration board molded it and made a halfpipe. Everyone was into fingerboarding with TDs and used the halfpipe all the time. |
