So, in light of a discussion me and our probably soon to be next mod blosom said, I'm gonna turn my musings on unitefingerboarding into discussions here, because, discussing is good for everyone, and it helps a forum grow.

So, I've always found one of the funnest things about fingerboarding is how creative you can get with tricks. Insane technical tricks, and, then, put them into grinds, or, just have fun experimenting with tricks. For example, my recent love in the way of fingerboarding tricks is the anti hospital flip. Its a hospital flip, except you use your back finger to flick it round rather than the front. Surprisingly easy I find, but, fun!
Today I just experimented. I wont spam with self promotion, but, this is the video. I cant explain how fun just messing around trying new tricks into a sort of anti hospital, for lack of a better way of explaining it, was.

It seems like, just in skateboarding, theres getting a LOT of people who are really good, and have amazing style, but, all the same tricks. The same 'conventional' (albeit very impressive and extremely good) tricks that get them noticed and hence they ascend the ladder into fame (or, ffi, haha.. Nah, I kid..) and they get sponsors. So far as I am aware, sponsorship is chosen because the persons videos are deemed good enough such that people would be inspired by the videos to buy the products. 'Good', in that sense, is often if not always defined by 'conventional' tricks. But, if I was going to make a video that I wanted to inspire people to do something, buy something, for example, I'd try to push the barrier on conventional tricks. Its getting to the point where you know, person x on *insert word here* wood fingerboards can sw bigflip bs tail flip out. Does that REALLY inspire you to buy their products, or are you just gonna favourite the video on youtube because its an interesting trick and you can watch it with a fair amount of drool on your lips?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the amazing standard of whats 'conventional' fingerboarding, these days. But, aren't we missing another side as well? I'm not by any means suggesting my mediocre messing around with anti hospitals, or silly grind combos, are 'inspiring', but, wheres the fingerboarding version of.. rodney mullen, or someone? Someone whos gonna think 'well, I could kickflip this, or, I could do something else?'

Being different just for the sake of being different is wrong. But being the same just for the sake of being the same is also wrong. So go on, have a little creativity! Think a bit before your next video and see what you can come up with, see if you can break the norm on what you usually do. You might find its a whole lot more fun!"




Whether thats a tl;dr for you, or you like myself enjoy reading (if so, I'll probably have many things like that on unitefingerboarding as time goes on, I love writing blogs), what do you think on creativity in fingerboarding?

On a video, what would inspire you to follow the purpose of the video more? for example, an advert for a company.. if you saw a really good trick, but, the same old same old trick, would you want to go and check out their products? Or if the trick was something you'd never seen really before because it was creative, would that make you want to check out the products more?

And also, what do you find more fun doing, getting really clean nice tricks down, or just messing around and trying something?

as i was reading the first part of this i thought 'a fingerboarding rodney mullen' then a little further down you said it .....his vids are soo good, he literally makes up tricks day in day out....and i think theres no end of potential for this in fingerboarding.....i even experimented with a few of my own....Ive kinda got a varialflip casper?...if that makes sense?....like i do a varielflip, whilst the flip is upside down (halfway through and turned 180) i catch the nose with my back finger and flip it and land....its pretty rad....i dunno if its actually a trick that people do, or whether it has a name?...but that came from me just experimenting.....

i think theres untapped potential for the next 'rodney mullen' of fingerboarding.....we havent really got one?........

i love messing around trying new stuff, but i also try to get them 'clean' once ive had my fun....then i usually give up and go back to fun

When i think of fingerboard Rodney Mullen I think of Ethan Ebeling and Tim Hurley, both those guys SO creative.
But I also have alot of fun just doing this "norm" so to speak. Like flips to grinds and whatnot. I'm not to into the hospitals and stuff.
But i lovee to have a tricky combination clean.

yeah tim hurleys probably the closest thing to rodney mullen Ive seen

blosom that basically sounds like one of the tricks in my video I made earlier.. the board 180s and half flips, so a varial half flip, then I put my back finger underneath the board and flip it over like a casper. Varial anti hospital would be its name so far as I can see ^_^

We really do have that space open, someone to just come along and blow everyones minds with some crazy ass tricks : o

Tim hurley and ethan ebeling are very creative indeed, I love their videos, but, I think theres still room for the barrier to be pushed so to speak

I think of Martin Winkler as the Rodney Mullen of fb

and even if your 'super steeze' you could do the varialflip type thing, catch it with the back finger, and try and spin an impossible for the landing......that would be awesome :shock: ...bit like the kickflip late impossible Dimitri does.....

id say tim hurley or ethan, or maybe even euan lynn, although he's not so well known and you dont really see much of him online

yeah, i seen that vid, (thomas hansen) its all good, but i dont think its that creative really?....it is.....but not like technically imo...

yeah theres no doubt he's totally badass, but its kinda an 'oldschool' style imo.......i love it though

some of the tricks tim hurley does in relativity 2 are really creative...his section on that vid was the standout section for me......because it was different to the rest i guess?
