I was on reddit today and i stumbled onto this

WARNING ABOUT A REALLY NASTY NEW VIRUS.
Meet CryptoLocker. It’s your worst nightmare. A lot of antivirus software, including the big names, cannot yet detect or stop it. If your computer gets it, CryptoLocker takes all your files hostage by encrypting them and giving you a certain amount of time to send a certain amount of money to the man behind the virus.

The encryption is very tidy, and so far seems uncrackable (well, crackable, but it might take a couple centuries). If you tamper with the virus itself, it will pretty much self-destruct and take everything with it. And the way the money is transferred, the dick programmer behind it all for the moment is pretty much uncatchable.

YOU CANNOT GET RID OF THIS VIRUS WITHOUT COMPLETELY WIPING YOUR COMPUTER. YOUR ONLY CHANCE IS PREVENTION AND PREPARATION.
Back up your computer to something like an external hard-drive, or even an internal hard-drive that you just take out and stuff away somewhere for safe keeping. Make sure your antivirus is up to date, avoid skeevy sites, and don’t open random emails. DO NOT download email attachments unless you know exactly what it is, because that seems to be how this is primarily being transmitted.

Bulk up on your virus protection, limit your porn and illegal cartoon-watching and torrents to safe sites, DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS UNLESS YOU’RE EXPECTING THEM, and just be careful in general, cause this one is one of the nastiest viruses around

So what exactly happens if someone takes all your files? I'm pretty stupid when it comes to stuff like this lol. Can they just see all your personal stuff like what sites or files you have saved or can they do that and also get the important stuff like get your credit card/paypal/bank statements? Is it anything more serious than them trying to blackmail people with the porn sites they have visited? I think Vice TV did a short article on this. either it's the same thing or something similar.

There is no such virus PERIOD.

and the vice article is about some kid who downloaded the wrong file and get added to the person owning the "Rat" 's slave list, people do this all the time and its been around for yonks, ratting is extremely easy to do, and its easy for anti virus to detect, and if you have common sence you wont get ratted, eg dont download the links from youtube videos like "call of duty 10th lobby hoster" or "download "insert game here" free before its released!"


i think that what you read on reddit was nothing but someone describing the ideal virus to scare people etc

:l I'm not scared actually. I have software to protect my computer and my dad's friend can fix my computer.
BTW I usually scan files before I download them so if you do that you should be fine.

or you know, don't be a dumbass and download without care and this wouldn't happen to you...
