| I proceed to write this from a chair on my front porch with nothing else next to me other than my fingerboard. Its just beautiful. My yellowood graphic with painted ytrucks and flatface dual bearing wheels. Its the perfect combination and works so effortlessly to create something so beautiful when manipulated. Now lets take a step back. A step back to a place that seems so far to the fingerboard community yet in real terms...only a couple of years ago. Before I had even begun to scratch the surface of fingerboarding and enter the world that has become such a big part of my life today, a company had been supplying and manufacturing items that would kickstart the industry forever. I give kudos to Flatface Fingerboarding. Now, I realize that obviously if you are reading this you have already been taken over by this up and coming hobby but I find it quite hysterical how as I am typing this, my computer still proceeds to place a red dotted line under the word fingerboarding. It is such a familiar word to me, but to the computer, it is a word not yet used in modern day society and not at all recognized other than the plural word for guitar necks. I will leave you with that piece of information to chew on. As I was saying, Flatface Fingerboards started out as something most people today that fingerboard think nothing of, a grip tape company. In 2003 Mike Schneider began selling grip tape because of his love for the hobby. Not for the money, but because he wanted to find a way to support the industry and be a part of something on the rise that would eventually become bigger than I know he could ever imagine. Even though the demand for his companies grip tape was little to none, that didn’t stop him. He began making wooden decks. Now at that time..wooden decks were not what they are today. You didn’t see children starting companies for decks left and right. Which is why Mike’s decks were to special. He was known for his decks and to this day still is. I can personally say that Flatface g12 decks are one of my favorite decks I have ever used. He didn’t just stop at making one style of deck. He went on to produce 9 generations of decks! Perfecting the flaws from each of the previous generations making a better and better deck every time. Two to three years later the deck making came to a halt because according to him, he had no good mold to use for the decks and no time to produce them on a big scale. Flatface didn’t come to a stop there. A short while after, Mike produced what has set the fingerboard industry to the huge standards that it has today, bearing wheels. Now when most people read that, they think nothing of it because of the fact that bearing wheels today, are so common and so used that anything other is considered bad and not worth the time. The wheels evolved from small, white, bearing-less wheels to generation 7 wheels which I can personally say are the most amazing wheels I have ever used. Mike went through 7 generations of wheels many of which are still here today because of their perfection. Being an american company, Mike has taken over the United States by storm and anyone involved in the hobby can back me up on that. Mike now produces many of his own products including ramps, rails, boards and decks as well as distributes other companies’ products to the Americas such as Blackriver products, a worldwide company, Lowpro products, Winkler Wheel products and many others. Flatface has helped take the fingerboard scene to a tremendous level, setting standards I can guarantee no one could ever imagine. This incredibly fun hobby will continue to reach new levels as companies try to push the limits, creating new things that can be used just for the love of the hobby. I believe that if any company has done the most for the industry up until this day, it is Flatface Fingerboarding.
