Erm. Didn't flatface distribute them and end up having to give them away because they didn't perform or sell well?

I think that's what I heard a couple years ago, something along the lines of that. Maybe it was a rumor but that's what I heard.

Motive's owner, Colin Zwirner, stopped making decks because of some reason, but his decks were amazing, good pop, nice plies, etc. and his motive rails were the most innovative thing I've ever seen.

The old shape sucked, the wheelbase was so short, not sure what the newer shape was like.

Well, from what I heard ages ago, Colin sold Mike a large amount of Motive decks to sell on Flatface. Colin then sold Motives on his own site for a much lower price rendering the large Flatface stock useless. Mike was pissed off and removed Motives from the store and has been giving away all the Motive decks away as extras, competition sponsor packs, promotional sales, etc. I have one of these old Motive decks from my 2nd place prize at Little Wheels 2 that Flatface sponsored. It's not actually THAT bad, the craftsmanship is really good, has good holes and kingpin holes, shape and pop is nice, only the wheelbase is too short for this type of deck. The newer Motive decks are apparently better but I have never tried one. However, he's stopped making decks now.

The old shape was alright. I made a mistake by having the wheelbase so short. The colors i gave mike werent that great either.

The story behind the FF decks is a complicated one. He had the decks for 6 months before he actually listed them for sale. Even then, he didnt market them or advertise them so they didnt really move. After a year of waiting to sell more decks i just decided to release decks on my website.

By that time, it was impossible to move decks at any price due to the market drying up. Jordan at redemption and Todd at NC were also having trouble moving stuff, so it wasnt just me. Mike bought the decks in the prime time of fingerboarding. The market was booming. By the time he got around to selling them the common price for a good fingerboard went from $30 to $15 or so. It seems like the market it picking back up though. That is a good thing

Im still planning on sending Mike a new 200 or so deck stock when i get the time to make them. Motive is being sold to Todd at NC, so id have to call them blanks or unbranded decks, but they will be the G4 shape. Hopefully that will help him replensih what he lost with the last stock. I feel bad, even though it wasnt entirely my fault.

I also sent a batch to SHQ which he absolutely loved. They sold pretty well in Germany. I closed the company before i could make another stock for them.

The new G4 shaped decks were all sent to germany besides a few that went to creekwood. Thats why you dont see many in the US.

Ive always wanted to rework the G3 shape. It would have been great if the kicks were a bit lower, the wheelbase was wider, and the mold was able to make decks wider than 28mm. It probably wont happen though. Im focused on a new project right now.

Hey Colin, nice of you to make a post on here to clear things up. Welcome to FBHQ, I hope you stay and post more. I would have liked to seen more development on Motive but good luck on your new project, I have no interest in it though.

I had quite a few good ideas for Motive, but the market wasnt there to support the spending it would take. The latest trend of everyone using either BW or FF decks really killed most of the good american companies. That, and making hundreds of decks at a time really killed the fun of making decks.

Im planning on giving this DIYFB thing a try, since nobody else out there offers it. It should be a big hit. Ill be selling complete deckmaking kits. They have absolutely everything you need to make the deck, and it is only $45. This includes a mold, glue, veneer, clamps, sandpaper, and maybe even a template depending on the machining costs. This should open up new opportunities for the DIYers out there.

It looks as if it is going to. Im trying to get as much exposure as possible to get me on my feet. Starting this type of company in this type of market is very hard, but i think it is worth it. The scene needs a company that can provide materials and tutorials. When people ask questions, all fo the big company owners just say "do research moron" without giving them any direction. Now everything will be in one, easy to access shop/site.

Well, I know NFB molds are well advertised for making custom fingerboard molds. No Comply also sells a variety of molds with veneer. Gator has a lot of mold/veneer packs on eBay. There are probably others.

Sure, you may argue about your project supplying all the materials but some people might consider buying some things in a store would be more economical.

In any case, this kind of product does not interest me.

Jims custom mold machining services arent very economical for the people who just want to try deckmaking. No comply charges two times more for just a mold, and they dont have a dowel pin locating system so they are a pain to line up. Gator's molds are low quality, and their veneer is insanely overpriced. $5 for 5 strips of pre-cut veneer.

The veneer i will be selling will be dyed in bulk, and priced by the foot. It will be uncut so you can cut it in any way you would like. There will be no minimum order quantity, and prices wont be sky high because the dying will be done in-house. The only dyed veneer i have found available for purchase has a minimum purchase quantity of 80 square feet, and is priced at $8.00 per square foot.

I hope im not coming off as full of myself and my product here. But the prices and convenience of the store i will be opening will be unbeatable. I actually dont think any retail stores or specialized veneer suppliers sell maple in a wide spectrum of colors. I have searched over the past 3 years and i still havent found anything. Its all softwoods like koto and rosewood.

You're not coming off as full of yourself. I wasn't saying your product was worse than the others, it's just that you yourself typed "since nobody else out there offers it" and I wanted to mention these other products.

Anybody have a G4? I want to see a pic. I kinda took a break during 2010/ first half of 2011, so I never saw a G4. but I liked G3's.

I guess i should have said "nobody else offers it at this price point, and convenience factor".

The old Motives had the wheelbase of a techdeck, but the body was longer than a techdeck. It sortof balanced out the high kicks. It was an odd shape.

Here is an "in the making" video of a few G4 decks being made.
