As I have browsed these forums (mostly as a lurker, but you guys have been SO helpful with my newbie questions in the past, so thank you!), I have noticed a number of people lamenting the rise of instagram in favor of forums like FBHQ and FFI. Forums used to be popular, but now they have generally fallen to the wayside in favor of instagram.

Why is instagram so popular for fingerboarding over forums? Forums as a medium of communication don't seem to be dying out at all. Is it because instagram is a free service that one can use to take pictures + short videos with decent quality by using their smartphone, which I'm assuming 99% of fingerboarders own? Is it just easy to set up, use, share with people in a social media setting, etc?

If I'm interested in checking out the larger scene outside my dorm room, would it be worth signing up for an account? The only two communities I tend to browse are FBHQ and /r/fingerboards on reddit.

I have Instagram but not for fingerboarding

Well right on the bat, Instagram is 100x more popular than most (if not, all) internet forums. I'd say it's worth making an account to follow your favorite companies. I'm not a fan of uploading trick clips or anything, tho..

I think it's so popular because it's made for mobile phones, what is a huge advantage nowadays.
Also, on IG are millions of people with variegated interests, so you will meet fingerboarders there, who wouldn't join an 'only fingerboarding' forum.
Some of the crap on IG drives me crazy, but it's a nice way to stay in touch with the people/companies you like and you always find interesting stuff and news.
So i'd say yes, give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

I really hate that "instagram fingerboard hype". There are a lot of stupid kids, and it's all about having the most cowplys/catfishbbqs/bawsewoods/wecas possbile and getting tons of likes for it.

i second this

it has kind of "raised the standards" of fingerboarding. kids need to have all of this stuff in order to become popular and its pretty dumb.

showing off your amazing fingerboard gear has always been there since fingerboarding became bigger.
there's plenty of ''reviews'' and unboxings on youtube and people still post their setups on forums like these as well.

on topic, i second kthumb's statements.

Yea i reckon the scene is more based on instagram nowadays than it used to be

everyone already has instagram. seems pretty simple to me.

I have a personal intagram. I follow skate accounts, fingerboard accounts, my friends, whatever. But I've been steering clear of FB accounts lately, I just can't deal with the annoying ig kids lol.
Instagram's fun though, even if you don't have one for fingerboard purposes.
