A lot of europe speaks english, especially the places that speak languages that are germanic in origin, so mainly northern europe. So, yea, you don't really need to know german other than the very very basics if you're going just for a small holiday.

I'd hate to speak german, just because.. Imagine trying to be romantic in german?
