How To: Cement Pool Empty
PostSubject: How To: Cement Pool   How To: Cement Pool EmptySun Jan 29, 2012 1:06 am

Props to Jeremy F for the idea, this is my version of it. Cheap ($28 USD for supplies) and pretty easy to make...

What you need:

1x Bag of doll house mini bricks
Best price that I found
1x Bag of Mason/Morter mix concrete (powder fine)
1x Pack of Styrofoam sheets
1x Piece of plywood
1x Epoxy resin glue
1x Polyurethane spray clear
2x sheets of 220 grit sandpaper
1x Box of extra long screws
1x Marker
1x Bread knife
1x Roll of Tape
1x Large serving spoon

Step 1:
Determine the shape and size of the pool. Use google or something to find a picture, or freehand your own. I recommend sketching it of a piece of paper.

Step 2:
After determining the dimensions of you pool, piece and cut the styrofoam accordingly. Use the bread knife to cut the styrofoam.

Step 3:
Draw the shape of the pool on the top sheet of styrofoam. Take the knife and cut out the shape.

Step 4:
Use the top piece that you just cut as a guideline. For every layer of styrofoam beneath it, trace about a 1/2 inch inward.

Step 5:
After you have a rough "step like" shape, take your long screws and screw in 10 from the top styrofoam sheet into the plywood base to hold all of the layers in place. Next, take your spoon or trowel, and smooth out the styrofoam until its flush and even with each other. *Note: You will want to have a vacuum handy ;D

Step 6:
Mix your concrete (thick) and lay down a base coat. *Note: It doesn't have to be smooth, the rougher the better.

Step 7:
Mix up another batch of cement, this time more on the smooth side. Trowel or spoon in the concrete. Be sure to have some come up over onto the top deck (coping) Get it as smooth as you can, then allow it to sit for 1-2 hours. Come back and smooth out the inside bowl with your serving spoon. Wait another 1-2 hours, and smooth again. Allow the concrete to cure for a couple of days.

Step 8-9-10:
-Mix up the Epoxy Resin. Slab a nice line around the top edge of the bowl. Take your mini-bricks and lay them out accordingly. Let the epoxy dry. This is also a good opportunity to fill in any cracks that happened.

-Tape your duct tape and tape up the outside frame of the bowl. This will hide the styrofoam and also act as a extruded guide for the top deck of the pool.

-Mix up more concrete, and lay it down flush to the top of the mini-bricks. Smooth it out, come back in 1-2 hours, smooth it out, come back in 1-2 hours, smooth it out, etc...

Step 11:
Sand the rough/uneven spots.

Step 12:
Paint accordingly

Step 13:
Clear coat the whooooolllle thing. Wax up the brick coping, and shred it up!

Awesome "How to".
I was thinking building me one (cause the one i though buying was to heavy to ship).

Certainly gonna make it a TV table, with plexiglass on it.

Please Mods, "post it" this topic.

thats a great guide but does anyone know how to get actual mini pool coping? how do you cut it out so the curvature of the bowl is perfect? why do some people put these metal brackets in while making their bowls? i need a answer to all these questions thanks

First of all, the metal bar is for reinforcement. It prevent cracks on life scale concrete. It isnt necessary here, but if you want to prevent cracks simply cover your bowl with a plastic bag as its drying. This will prevent it from drying too quickly, thus fore preventing cracks.

Secondly, the Pool coping is added by epoxying the tiles to the rough coat of concrete. After the epoxy has set, use the finer mix, and cover the entire inside of the bowl, tiles and All. Then, before the concrete begins to dry, use a damp cloth to wipe the tiles free of concrete.

Lastly, the pool wont be perfect. Simply make sure that your curves arent too sharp, and that your board can easily roll up the sides without hassle.

Hope dat helpeded broski! happy

T could be a block... But sculpting it would be incredibly difficult.
