Thinking about getting one this week,
Anyone any suggestions..

Eventually I would want a fish eye and an x grip any suggestions on that..
I wanna check the compatibilityof my old shotgun mic. If not I will eventually need one of those.

Opteka 0.20x is probably the cheapest fisheye you can get for an SLR. There are much more high level ones like the Rokinon, Samyang, Nikkor etc. which are very good fisheyes but they are much more expensive.

I agree with finn, the opteka lenses aren't the best by any means but a good starting point i guess, If I was you I would bite the bullet and buy a samyang, they just really appeal to me.

PS, pick up a 50mm while your at it, There the bargain of the century.

Fool, screw on lenses don't work for mirrored cameras, like an SLR, they don't focus. Just go with any of the manybrand 8mm/7mm/6.5mm fisheyes, or go a Peleng if you want an extra bit of width. Beware with the Peleng though, it has a small ammount of vignetting in the corners and doesn't deal with flares well.

How is the stick lens for filming fingerboarding???

It doesn't work, there's no way you can focus them, and even if you could, they'd look like shit.

Get a 60D, not a 600D.

They're a tad better on about everything.

Lol I meant stock lens , seems to focus just fine on every video I looked at....

And filming is lame lol, that's all I want it for tbh, that and a few photos it more the portability that interest me..

I use ta have a vx lugged around in my bag before I fbd, the cannon would be a lot easier

stock lens is pretty good if you ask me, I use it a lot. If you want better quality on a flat lens, get a 50mm f1.8, they're cheap and tasty.

its not worth getting a sick camera, and then raping quality with a cheapy 30 quid fisheye.. get one of the decent lenses,the samyang 8mm type lenses, they're well worth the money. Or if you're loaded, get a sigma 10mm.

Opteka's xgrip is really nice, I really like it.

But honestly, 600D is the place to go, i think the screen is definitely worth the extra money, makes composition so much easier. Plus the fact of fully manual exposure and audio controls, the audio controls alone would be worth the extra money. Definitely better than the possible corruption of your camera with Magic Lantern.

ive been looking into magic lantern as i originally planned to get the 550d but since i will probably being getting it on a payment scheme i dont wana risk it ( even though it seems to be a tiny chance) of bricking it.

the flip out screen is cool but i would be paying mostly for the audio controls that i would get with magic lantern anyway.

ive been readin the chances of corrupting your firmware are pretty low but i think i'm too chicken to risk it... it was the sound that sold me on the 600,

Yeah the 550D does, but i'm just saying the 600D is fully manual if needs be!

Magic lantern can't brick your camera, as it's installed onto your card, and remains on your card. As soon as that card is taken out or Magic lantern is removed from it, they'll be no traces of it on your body. If your camera stops, it's because your card is too slow in data rate or in class rating, so just turn off your camera, take it out, and buy a new card.


As Thom said, buy the 600d. It's superior to the 550d video wise (though they are on level ground when ML is installed). That extra $100 something for the vari-angle LCD and manual audio is well worth it.


The manybrand fisheyes aren't anything special. Buy right or buy twice, save for the Tokina 10-17. It handles lower apetures far better than the manybrand and the Sigma, and can be zoomed past fisheye, AND is has a really solid build and won't break if you were to somehow drop it.
